SO Fine Art launches the award-winning artist Stephen Doyle’s solo show ‘Post-binary’ on the 14th February, 2019.

Doyle has wasted no time since his graduation from Crawford College Cork in 2017, where he received the ‘Student of the Year’ award with a solo show at the Lavit, Cork.  Abroad he won both the Ashurst Emerging Artist Award, and the Sunny Art Prize. Most recently he was shortlisted for the Zurich Portrait Prize at the National Gallery, Ireland.

This body of work continues to explore Doyle’s interest of gender identity in contemporary society. The work challenges societies preconception of binary gender categories and suggests that gender is more complex than simply, male or female. Although representation of the gender debate crops up in mainstream media from time to time. Terms such as queer, genderfluid, non-binary etc. cause confusion due to the lack of education and open dialogue around the subject matter in wider society. Doyle invites the public to an overdue conversation around gender ‘norms’ and poses the question, ‘Should a system that suits the majority be a system worth keeping when it can cause harm to the minority?’

Doyle uses fabric as a metaphor to describe our individualism through shape, colour and pattern. From birth, we are conditioned to view our environment in binary terms and thus see floral patterns and bright colours as being feminine and geometric shapes and dark colours as being masculine.  According to Doyle, he subverts these beliefs by surrounding the spectral figures in his paintings with a variety of material thus rendering each figure neutral. Furthermore, he brings the fabric into the physical space opening up public discourse and allowing the viewer to readdress their ideology on identity.

We are fortunate that we can interact and view these works by this talented painter as he continues the gender discussion in the public domain.

French Connection’s Spring’19 collection encompasses the meaning of everyday wear. The collection comprises of real clothing for real situations, designed to become relied upon staples loved for years to come. That is not to say a sense of fun and individuality is not present, this collection is a celebration of truly wearable style and colour.

Influences from sport can be found throughout the Spring’19 collection, a design feature that has become signature to French Connection over recent years. Comfort has been kept in mind while designing each piece which has resulted in an eclectic succession of familiar, failsafe wardrobe essentials. An array of colourful pops can be found throughout the collection, from the palest of lilac, lavender and baby blue to ballerina pink and vegetal green. Mustard and tomato red bring brightness in pieces suited to sunnier climates, with new denim washes including super bleach and dark rinse indigo for a modern look.

Chupi has reached an online milestone with 100,000 followers on Instagram, how did the jewellery designer reach this incredible feat?

Chupi told The Sunday Business Post that finding the right people to work with was the key to her success. Building a team that believed in reaching the shared goals of the company was what ensured Chupi became a global business. When a friend suggested Chupi create a facebook page for her business, Chupi agreed, not understanding the global reach Facebook would provide for the business. Chupi kept her content authentic to the business, telling the love stories of the customers coming in to purchase engagement rings. This touched hearts all over the world and soon Chupi had fans from all across the globe.

Video content is proving increasingly popular, Chupi has recognized this. The brand created a tribute video to Powerscourt Townhouse Centre over Christmas to capture the magic of the centre which had 75,000 views within a week of posting. The brand has become masters at social media keeping the content consistent and engaging.

Today, Chupi sells in 64 countries around the world and have created 15,000 special pieces of jewellery in Dublin. Through social media and partnering with Facebook, Chupi has set her sights on increased growth in international markets for 2019.

Game of Thrones star, actor Liam Cunningham recounts the stories behind DIGNITY, a Photographic Exhibition at the Centre, featuring some of the extraordinary and intimate images captured by him on his trip to South Sudan last year.

In May 2018, Liam traveled to the capital, Juba, with World Vision Ireland, one of the world’s largest child-focused overseas aid agency to meet with and raise awareness of the people forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing civil war. Liam documented his trip with some thought-provoking photography, capturing a rare glimpse of life for those struggling to survive so far away from home. World Vision Ireland’s humanitarian programmes in South Sudan are funded by the Irish people via a grant from Irish Aid. Through this Exhibition, World Vision Ireland is seeking to raise awareness of their work on the ground and give the public a better understanding of how their funds go directly to providing vital help to internally displaced people in South Sudan.

DIGNITY, an Exhibition of 1O images, will be exhibited in the Courtyard Gallery until 3 February.

The Times in London featured Lady Powerscourt (Laura Furlong)  in the disappearing dress from the children’s book the Townhouse: Lady Powerscourt’s Disappearing Dress. The dress was designed by Irish designer Synan O’Mahony and showcased at the launch for the book.

The book The Townhouse: Lady Powerscourt’s Disappearing Dress was launched by Oscar nominated Film Director Lenny Abrahamson along with author Shireen Marcus and illustrator Tarsila Krüse transport the reader back to the eighteenth century with their charming children’s picture book.

It’s 1774 and in the Townhouse the children are fast asleep in the Nursery. Lady Powerscourt is in her dressing room, anxiously awaiting the delivery of her beautiful new ballgown. What could go wrong? The star of the book, the Townhouse, on 59 South William Street, is home to the Wingfield family – Lord and Lady Powerscourt, their six children, Mrs Pudding, the cook, Mrs Chamberpot, the housekeeper, Rusty, the dog, and Bully, the horse.

Fast forward to the twenty first century, still on South William Street, the Townhouse is now home to the most exquisite designers and artists, and filled with restaurants, shops and galleries. The beautiful eighteenth century rooms are still there for you to visit, admire and enjoy just as Lord and Lady Powerscourt intended. Use your imagination and walk through the pages of the story.

Shireen Marcus, commenting on the launch of the book: ‘I’ve been doing tours of the Townhouse for many years and I’ve always imagined Lady Powerscourt and her family living there. To be given the opportunity to create this beautiful children’s book with Tarsila, who brought my characters to life, is a dream come true’.

 

Chupi shines in a new advertising campaign in Dublin airport to showcase the latest collection. The campaign was created in collaboration with Facebook for their Made by Love event.

The latest collection was also featured in VIP magazine. The Chupi launch for the A/W Collection at Atrium began with gin cocktails created with Fever-Tree tonic, Hendricks gin, and astrology-themed desserts. Press and influencers arrived in Atrium to celebrate the beloved jewellery brand and the ‘Stars in the Sky’ Collection that would make the perfect gift this Christmas.
